Insemination
At Vitanova, we help childless couples, single women and lesbians with insemination. Insemination is a fertility treatment that in many cases can fulfil people’s dream to have children. If insemination is not successful, IVF can be the next step.
Artificial insemination
Insemination can help couples where the man’s sperm quality is a little low, or where the woman has endometriosis or suffers from vaginismus.
Single women or lesbian couples can start with insemination and go on to IVF treatment later if needed.
Insemination options at Vitanova
Insemination can be with sperm from either the partner or a donor. When donor sperm is used, you can have sperm from either an anonymous donor or an open donor. It is also possible to use sperm from a man you know, but this requires a little planning, because his sperm will have to be frozen in a sperm bank first.
Contact us by phone or e-mail if you want to find out more about using someone you know as a donor.
Counselling on insemination and becoming a parent
Some people want to become parents so much that failure to do so in a natural way can completely overshadow the joy of being together as a couple.
We draw on a lot of experience when counselling about becoming parents through insemination. We know that most people, whether single or couples, find becoming a parent a moving and emotional event. We try to make the process as gentle and pleasant for you as possible. The physical framework of the clinic will make you feel welcome and safe. The insemination rooms are designed so that if you are a couple, you can both lie on the couch during and after the insemination. Some single women also want to share the experience with a friend, and that is also an option.
Insemination requires preparation
Before the insemination, you must have a consultation with one of the midwives at Vitanova. This is so that we can hear your wishes for the time you will spend with us and can advise you about what you can do yourself to optimise your chances of pregnancy via insemination. We will talk about diet, lifestyle, and stimulants you should avoid. For this consultation, you must fill out the form at the back of our information brochure.
Examinations before insemination
Depending on your medical history, we recommend further examinations before you go ahead with insemination. These could include examination of the Fallopian tubes, known as HSE (water scanning), which you can have carried out at Vitanova. If the woman has had irregular periods, we usually recommend that hormone blood tests should also be made. We recommend that the woman should have an ultrasound scanning of the abdomen before you start with insemination. The scan will not show whether there is passage in the Fallopian tubes, but whether they and the uterus are intact. And the man always needs to have a semen analysis made, before you start with insemination. This will show whether the sperm motility is good enough to fertilise an egg during insemination. The analysis can be done at Vitanova’s laboratory. If the man’s sperm motility is low and cannot fertilise an egg during insemination, you can choose IVF instead or be inseminated with donor sperm.
How an insemination is carried out
Insemination is carried out in a calm atmosphere and in collaboration with you. If you have chosen acupuncture, you will receive it before and immediately after insemination. The acupuncturists, like the mid-wives, are specialists in fertility treatment.
The actual insemination is comparable with a gynaecological examination. What happens is that the mid-wife inserts the sperm right up in the mouth of the uterus using a thin catheter. The sperm find their own way to the egg. The insemination can be with either donor sperm or the partner’s sperm. We buy donor sperm from the Danish sperm banks, www.nordiccryobank.com and www.cryosinternational.com.
You can be inseminated with sperm from an anonymous donor or from an open donor. An open donor has given permission for your child to contact him after reaching the age of 18. You can find out more about the legal guidelines sperm banks must follow when selecting donors and storing donor sperm in the National Board of Health’s executive order no. 753 of 3rd July 2006.
If you are a couple and the insemination is to be with the man’s sperm, the semen must be delivered or created at the clinic about an hour before the insemination is to take place. The semen has to be processed in the laboratory before we can use it for insemination. If you want to make the semen at Vitanova, we have a nice room where you can be alone together. Afterwards, you can go for a walk or wait at the clinic.
Insemination and prices – what does it cost?
Since we are a private fertility clinic, you have to pay for our treatment and you don’t need to be referred to us by your doctor. Before treatment can start, you must have blood tests for HIV and hepatitis. If the woman has had pelvic inflammatory disease, we recommend that she should have an HSE (water scanning), before you start treatment. If the woman has irregular periods, we recommend that hormone blood tests should be taken. Blood tests, HSE and scanning can be done at Vitanova.
