If you want your child to be able to contact the donor later in life, you can choose to be inseminated with an open donor. An open donor has agreed that the child can contact him when the child turns 18. This is an option that the child can make use of, if he/she wishes to do so.

However, as a parent it is important to realise that even though you choose an open donor, he will never be a father to the child. A father is physically present in the child’s life and together with the mother he creates the best conditions for the child. When a child is alone with his/her mother the obvious question ”where is my father?” will come up. In our opinion it is important to tell the truth when the child asks this question. Even small children understand that they are wanted and that the parents had to have help in fulfilling their wish to have a child. In families with mother, father and child the father is present and thus the questions are not as evident. Still you should consider telling things as they are.
