The Danish National Authorities for Food and Health recommend that women wishing for pregnancy should take a vitamin pill with 400 microgrammes of folic acid daily. Folic acid is a B-vitamin that reduces the risk of spinal hernia in foetuses. During the 22nd to 29th days after fertilization the neural column develops in the foetus; almost before you are aware of pregnancy. The neural column later develops into the spinal column and brain. A folic acid supplement is recommended until the 12th week of pregnancy.
Even with a healthy and varied diet we recommend a vitamin pill daily, which in addition to the usual vitamins also includes folic acid. At the chemist’s you can buy vitamin pills covering the special needs of those desiring pregnancy.
